Welcome to the The Kindergarten Planner! I'm Miss Patrick and I am so glad you stopped by!
We are working together at a math conference this week! Collaborating with other teachers in my district, we came up with a math lesson that aligns with the common core and has an approach to teach about "It's the process NOT the product".
    West Springfield Schools
    Common Core Standards:
K.NBT.1, 1.NBT.1, 1.NBT.2, Numbers and Operations in Base Ten
    Standards of Mathematical Thinking:
    1. Make sense of a problem and persevere in solving them.
    2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
3.Construct a viable argument and critique the reasoning of others.
    4. Model with mathematics.
    5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
    6. Attend to precision.
    7. Look for and make use of structure.
    8. Look for an express regularity in repeated reasoning.
    Objective:
Students will understand that the two digits of a two-digit number represent amounts of tens and ones.
This could be used as an assessment to see where children are with their sense of numbers.
    Critical thinking questions:
Why did you group those manipulatives in that way?
What does that group mean or stand for?
How could you have grouped them differently?
    Can you explain your thinking?
Why did you group them like that?
I can group different objects and tell how and why I grouped them .
    Activity:
Students will work in partners or groups and be given a basket of manipulatives...buttons, paper clips, erasers, crayons.....anything
Students will be asked to group their manipulatives and show how they counted their objects.
Students will record their work to show how they figured out the number of items.
Students will explain and tell why they grouped their objects the way they did.
Teacher accepts all reasoning and ideas.
    Closure:
Discuss how grouping into tens can make counting large amounts easier.
Notice how and why students grouped as they did. Do not be as worried about whether correct answer is given as long as they can explain their thinking accurately.
    Assessment:
Assess ability to group items and skip count amounts.
Assess ability to group the easiest way to count bigger numbers.
Assess ability of students to orally explain and pictorially show their thinking.
Assess next steps to take for understandings.
